Bird Sightings List 2010

The thing that keeps birdwatching fresh, particularly here, is that every year is different in terms of birds seen and you just can’t predict what may be waiting for you to find in even familiar locations. I didn’t get out and about locally as much as I would have liked to during 2010, so I may have missed a few passage migrants from my lists of previous years. We also missed visiting a few locations due to the particularly wet winter weather, but those we did make more than made up for that. The list is an honest one and does not include sightings of birds we may have seen at certain locations in previous years.

The most memorable outings were those to Brazo del Este, in May , particularly for Herons, and Sierra de las Nieves for a wonderful sighting of  Rock Buntings. Again, we have been to these locations and ticked more species, but the quality of the sightings more than made up for any omissions. A personal first sighting (in Spain) for me were those of Great White Egrets, one at La Janda. then another at Brazo del Este. An unexpected sighting was of a lone Sacred Ibis, again at Brazo del Este, it was with a Spoonbill flock.

A special sight in my garden was of  Short-toed Creepers; two ‘babies’ left their nest and clung for dear life to the trunk of a palm tree where they were fed by their parents.

Others may have been seen on passage, so are marked (psg), plus the  location if it was specific or outside passage periods. (For example Black Kites on passage were a very common sight, but some do stay to breed, esp. around the general Doñana area & we saw some at Brazo del Este in May.)
